THC Seltzers on Draft: An Emerging Risk

Hemp-derived THC beverages are a real and growing category, and in a few markets they're starting to show up on tap instead of just in cans. If that ever comes to a bar in our service area, there are real open questions worth knowing about before it happens — not after.

Is This Actually Happening?

Draft THC service exists, but it's still rare. Minnesota is the first state to explicitly legalize on-tap hemp-derived THC service, and even there it's limited to a small number of named venues. It's not a normalized bar practice anywhere yet, and there's currently no draft THC service happening in North Carolina.

What the Brewers Association Says

The Brewers Association — the main US craft brewing trade group — has published its own position on this, and it's notably honest about how little is actually known. They describe the risk of THC compounds diffusing into a shared beer line, and contaminating whatever's served from it next, as poorly understood and not yet validated by research — but also not ruled out. They also note that keeping THC dosing consistent in a keg over time hasn't been studied either.

What We Do and Don't Know

One real, documented detail: because THC seltzer typically lacks the low pH that helps keep a beer line food-safe, at least one brewery running it on tap has reported needing to clean that line more frequently. Beyond that specific point, there isn't published research on how THC beverage formulations behave inside draft tubing compared to beer residue — so treat any more detailed technical claim about it, including ones we could make ourselves, as an educated guess rather than an established fact.

The Practical Takeaway

This isn't a live problem for NC bars right now, and North Carolina doesn't yet have a regulatory framework for draft THC service. But if this category keeps growing the way it has elsewhere, it's worth knowing that sharing equipment between beverage types isn't a solved problem yet — and that regular, professional line service is the same starting point regardless of what's flowing through the system.
